An intensive course that will focus on both bookbinding technique and form. Students will learn the accordion structure and its variations and will explore the form to create three artist’s books. Students will create an accordion book, tunnel book, and pop-up book, with emphasis on both craftsmanship and content. Historical and contemporary examples will be discussed. Students will receive a supply list and should bring their own materials beyond paper and board.

Ceramics: Ceramic Surface Design |

This week-long course will focus on manipulating the surface of clay in its greenware state using slip, oxides, and underglazes. Through lectures and demonstrations, students will explore imagery composition and design techniques on sculptural and/ or unitarian forms including sgraffito, Mishima, water etching, paper and tape templates, wax resist, and more! Students will spend the morning sessions creating forms and the afternoon experimenting with surface design. A variety of handbuilding and wheel throwing techniques will also be demonstrated. Students will also have the opportunity to fire and glaze work produced in the course.

Digital Illustration: How to Pitch an Illustrated Book |

A week-long intensive where students will learn to write and illustrate their own comics and picture books using digital programs or traditional art making techniques. The foundation for what is required to write and illustrate a picture book or comic project is covered and the center focus of the workshop. Beyond this techniques in InDesign and Photoshop are covered. Students are encouraged to bring their own digital drawing devices to the class. Access to a digital drawing device is recommended but not required.

Introduction to Adobe Creative Cloud software including Photoshop and Illustrator will be covered. This workshop is intended for students who want to learn beginner-level software skills as an entry point into the field of Graphic Design and Advertising.

Painting: Painting the Figure from Life |

A week-long intensive course that will expand students’ observational figure painting skills with a focus on anatomical landmarks, compositional structure, and limited and expanded palettes. Students will work directly with the model in a studio setting. Each day will consist of two three-hour sessions with the model, and a working critique lunch. The course will include preliminary rapid paintings, single-session paintings (3 hours), cut paper collage, and multi-session paintings. Students will receive a supply list and should bring their own materials.

Print As Playground: Exploring Multiples |

This week-long course offers participants the opportunity to create multi-color, multi-layer original prints through the exploration of various printmaking techniques and mark making strategies. Through hands-on demonstrations led by the instructor, participants will be given a broad knowledge base from which to approach the creation of imagery that is more improvisational and intuitively directed. With this in mind, participants are encouraged to approach their own personal projects with a spirit of playfulness, curiosity and collaboration. Techniques including screenprinting, block printing, letterpress printing and photo transfers will be demonstrated as potential catalysts for artistic expression and exploration.
